Centralizing Fleet Management for Volkswagen
Volkswagen needed a unified platform where internal and external fleet managers could manage their entire fleet operations in one place, from infleeting vehicles to coordinating routes and scheduling maintenance.
Problem
Fleet management was fragmented across different platforms without Volkswagen oversight or integration. Fleet managers lacked a centralized system to efficiently infleet vehicles, track fleet condition, coordinate routes, and manage service appointments. This created inefficiencies and limited Volkswagen's ability to compete with dedicated infleeting platforms in the market. Additionally, coordinating across 7 specialized teams created complexity in building a cohesive solution.
Solution
Working as part of a distributed team structure with 7 specialized groups, I served as a flex designer supporting multiple workstreams. I designed key features including the payment method system, infleeting tables, fleet management dashboard, and route mapping interface. Close collaboration across teams was essential to maintain consistency despite the distributed structure. The solution consolidated fragmented workflows into a single platform where fleet managers could handle everything from vehicle infleeting to service scheduling and route planning.
Impact
The platform launched with a phased rollout, introducing new features every three months. Each feature release brought significant user growth, with adoption increasing between 25 to 50% as fleet managers recognized the value. The platform successfully positioned Volkswagen to compete with established infleeting platforms while giving the company direct oversight of fleet operations.
